reading goals for 2019

Finally, after suffering through these long past 12 months, we’ve made it. It’s a new year and it’s a new us. That’s the idea anyways, right? I went back through my tumblr blog to last year’s December to see if I had created any goals and the only thing I could find was my Beat The Backlist challenge - I failed all the goals I laid out for it. Sometimes you just aim too high…So I figure I would be more realistic in my goals, reflecting on what did and did not work during the year of 2018. So here they are:
1. I will no longer be using Goodreads’ update feature. I focused too much on the percentage of a book I was reading rather than just reading it. If I feel the need to document my feelings as I go, I will make posts on here as a way to ‘liveblog’ the experience.
2. I will set my Goodreads reading challenge number to 1. Again, focused too much on the amount of books I read rather than the content of said books.
3. Read at least 1 book on my backlist once a month. I’ve donated/sold nearly all the books I’ve accumulated from overspending over the past ~2 years and I want to keep my backlist short, especially with all the new releases coming up.
4. Read at least 1 library book once a month. This goal is more for the new releases. Sometimes I absolutely must have the new release coughthewickedkingcough but other times I can and should wait to read it for free.
5. Participate in and commit to at least one reading challenge/readathon crafted by someone within the book community. I usually start off good but then lose steam as I go. I want to finish what I start.
6. Write reviews for each book read. Not essay-length reviews, more like 5 sentences. Toughing on the topics: Characters, Plot, Writing, Pros, and Cons. I just have to write something for each book so that when I look back on my reading for the year, I’ll know what I liked/disliked about it.
7. No more star ratings. This ties in with the above goal. Star ratings are just an easy way to review something but doesn’t tell you anything. I can rate something 4/5 stars and still have issues with the book but on the surface, it just looks like I had no real thoughts about it beyond ‘liked it’.
